With the shield or on it - Со щитом или на щите

The citizens of ancient Sparta were famous in history for their hardihood. The Spartan women were bold and dauntlesss. Every Spartan lady was bred up to be able to say to those she best loved that they must come home from battle “with the shield or on it” — either carrying it victoriously or carried upon it as a corpse. A Greek writer tells a story of a mother who sending her son to a field of battle gave him his shield with the words, “With it or on it”.
